Comments:
- The draw used ball set 8 in the Guinevere machine and the average main Lotto prize was £19.21.
One in every 42.7 main Lotto tickets won a prize (=2.34% of players).
- If all 13,983,816 ticket combinations were additionally purchased for the main Lotto game, they would have made a loss of £10,766,333.
- The prior history of the main Lotto jackpot ticket included no wins.
- You can put this week's freak results mainly down to patterns on the
playslip (which has 5 numbers per row) meaning that gaps of 10
(2 and 12 plus 28, 38 and 48) were prime targets for those who like to make
vertical lines on their playslip. Subsequent changes to the record books
included:
- The second highest number of jackpot, 5-match and 4-match winners ever,
each category only beaten by the biggest freak of them all,
Lottery #9.
- The second lowest jackpot and 5-match prizes ever, again only beaten by
Lottery #9.
- The third lowest 4-match prize ever.
- The number of jackpot winners exceeded the number of 5+bonus winners for
the first time, which is remarkable because you
are 6 times more likely to win a 5+bonus prize than a jackpot. The previous
record holder, Lottery #31, had seven jackpot
winners and eight 5+bonus winners.
- It was the first time two consecutive weeks had a
5+bonus prize below £50,000.
- If it's any compensation to the jackpot winners, this was the highest
individual jackpot prize won by more than 20 jackpot winners. No, I didn't
think that would help...
- Ticket sales continue their
downwards spiral and are now 9 million less than 6 weeks ago and below the
70 million mark for the first time in 12 weeks.
- An even worse fate awaited the
combined sales, which fell not
only for a record seventh consecutive week, but also to their lowest level
since the first week the scratchcards were introduced.
- One of the jackpot prizes remained unclaimed for approximately 3 months,
which is the longest period any jackpot prize has suffered such a fate.
- Only one match for me this week as I completed my first annual
subscription on a losing note. From
next week onwards, my new subscription will cover
2 tickets per draw.
- £1,022,050 of unclaimed prizes (3.30% of the total prize pool) from this week expired at 11.00pm BST on Thursday 12th September 1996 and have been added to the National Lottery Distribution Fund.
